Then in 1909 social worker and minister AliceStebbins Wells pressed Los Angeles to establish a new city ordinance allowing female policewomen. With the supportof some influential people, the ordinance was quickly adopted and on September 12, 1910, Wells became the firstfemale policewoman with arrest powers in America. In 1914, she was the subject of a biographical film entitledThe Policewoman. The University of California created the first course dedicated to the work of female police officersin 1918. After 30 years of service, she retired in 1940 and died in 1957.
