問題詳情
VII. 閱讀測驗 In Ethiopia in 1984, the summer rain did not arrive. Due to the serious water shortage (缺少), the harvests failed. Millions of people were left without food and water, being close to death. Many of them even lost their lives. However, most people in the West were not aware of this tragedy. They were busy shopping and decorating for the coming Christmas. The pictures of starving African children shocked the whole world when they were broadcast on the TV news. Seeing these images, the Irish singer Bob Geldof was so upset that he wrote a song with Midge Ure, a Scottish singer. Geldof invited many famous musicians to record this song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The song revealed that while people in the West were preparing for a happy Christmas, there was a tragic world in Ethiopia: “There’s a world outside your window, and it’s a world of dread and fear Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting (刺痛) of tears... And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas time The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life Where nothing ever grows No rain or rivers flow Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?” The song touched the hearts of the people around the world, selling millions of copies. The money received all went to Ethiopia. Most importantly, it has raised public concern for the hunger in that country.
