(一)          Where do you think all the cute, furry puppies and kittens found in pet stores come from? Some are from the breeder, and they provide healthy and loving environments for their pets. However, a large number of them are from kitten factories, where the animals are raised in terrible conditions. The pens are pretty small and dirty, so there are more unhealthy pets there. In fact, two to four million dogs are born in American kitten factories every year, with most of them ending up in pet stores.　　        Sadly, many of the cats and dogs that are bought from stores die in animal shelters because people have a hard time with caring for them. In the US alone, one cat or dog is put down every eight seconds, totaling four million deaths each year.　　        Fortunately, Los Angeles, California, is doing something about it. In January 2019, the city became the first state to adopted a ban that prohibits pet stores from selling commercially bred animals. If you don’t follow the new law, you’ll be fined US$250 for the first offence, double that for the second time, and double that for the third. This is sure to reduce the number of kitten factories.
