(d) Chile 1960 Earthquake, the largest earthquake recorded in the 20thcentury. Originating offcoast of southern Chile on May 22, 1960, the tremor caused great damage and loss of life both inthat country-  41  tsunamis that is generated--in distant Pacific coastal areas. The earthquakehit at 3:11 pm approximately 1 00 miles (160 km) off the coast of Chile, parallel to the city ofValdivia. (Valdivia was a severely damaged city by the  42  tsunani in this earthquake.) Aseries of foreshocks the previous day had warned the people in Chile of the   43  disaster,which caused major destruction in Concepcion. The faul t-displacement source of the earthquakeextende  44   an estimated 560-620 mile (900-1,000 km) stretch of the Nazca Plate, which   45   under the South American Plate. As the quake occurred just prior to a revolution inseismologic technology in the 1960s, these figures are based mainly on post hoc analysis. ManyChilean cities, including Puerto Montt, where noticeable  46  occurred, and Valdivia, wherenearly half of the buildings were rendered uninhabitable, sustained significant damage. Thoughthe havoc wreaked by the shaking was not inconsequential, most of the casualties _47_ thedescent 15 minutes later of a tsunami that rose up to 8O feet (25 meters) high on the expanse ofChilean coastline-   48   by the cities of Lebu and Puerto Aisen--that paralleled the subductingplate. The combined effects of the disaster  49  two million people homeless. Though thedeath toll was never fully  50  ，early estimates ranging into the thousands were scaled back to1,655.
