The Death of Jin Yong
          October 30, 2018 was a sad day for fans of Chinese martial arts novels around the world. That was when LouisCha, better known by his pen name Jin Yong, died in Hong Kong at the age of 94. As an outstanding martial artsnovelist, Cha had sold over 300 million copies of his books at the time of his death. He was perhaps the richest andmost famous Chinese writer in the world. Some even say Jin Yong is the name all Chinese people should know.
         Cha showed a talent for writing when he was young. While he was in law school, he worked as a journalist tosupport his studies. Readers loved the way he wrote the news and later his stories. His first novel, The Book and theSword, in 1955 turned out to be a big hit. His books include not only kung fu masters and heroic quests but also Chinesehistory and culture. You can also read the characters’ problems and how they deal with them. Cha also added politicsinto his writing. During an interview with The New Yorker magazine in 2014, he said several of his later novels wereactually about events during China’s Cultural Revolution. His novels are not just widely read in Chinese-speakingcountries. A few of his works have been translated into English. They have also been adapted many times into movies,comic books, TV shows, and even video games.
         Cha was a hard-working person. Although he was already successful, he went back to school and got adoctorate degree in Chinese history from St. John’s College at the University of Cambridge in 2010.
