Reading can help reduce stress
Reading is the best way to relax and even sixminutes can be enough to reduce the stress levels bymore than two thirds, according to a new study. Andit works better and faster than other ways, such aslistening to music, going for a walk or settling downwith a cup of tea, the study found.
Psychologists believe this is because the humanmind has to focus on reading. When people look atthe words and notice them, they can ease thetensions in muscles and the heart.
The study was carried out on a group ofvolunteers by the University of Sussex. Readingworked best, reducing stress levels by 68 %, said Dr.David Lewis. Listening to music reduced the levelsby 61 %, having a cup of tea or coffee lowered themby 54 %, and taking a walk by 42 %. Playing videogames brought them down by 21 % from theirhighest level but still left the volunteers with heartrates above their starting point. Dr. Lewis said: "Losing yourself in a book isthe final relaxation. "It really doesn't matter whatbook you read, by losing yourself in a book you cankeep away from the worries and stress of theeveryday world and imagine what the author means.
So it’s true that having a good habit of readingcan not only provide us with good learning but alsogood health in both bodies and minds.
