(b) Hot dogs Eating Contest
It does not matter whether hot dogs are called frankfurters or wieners; they are a delicious treat. One hot hog is a tasty snack. Perhaps you can even eat two or three hot dogs. But can you eat 59 hot dogs in 10 minutes? Welcome to Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, a 100-year old competition. Every year, people from around the world gather to discover who can eat the most hot dogs.
Nathan’s Famous was founded by a Polish immigrant, Nathan Handwerker, and his is truly an authentic “only in America story.” He started his business in 1916 with a small hot dog stand in Coney Island, New York. He sold hot dogs that were manufactured based on a recipe developed by his wife, Ida. On July 4, 1916, four immigrants had a hot dogs eating contest at Nathan’s Famous, a popular restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, to prove who loved their country the most. One of the immigrants, James Mullen, ate 13 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Nowadays, the annual hot dog eating contest is a serious sport. Every year, thousands join the contest and millions watch it on television.
The rules of the contest are very simple. Twenty people enter the contest, and they have to eat as many hot dogs as they can in 10 minutes. Many people think the greatest hot dog eating champion is Takeru “Tsunami”Kobayashi. He won the contest six times in a row, from 2001 to 2006. He is an unbelievable eater!
