問題詳情
四、篇章結構: I.In 1859 Charles Darwin published the Origin of Species, introducing the theory ofevolution to a world-wide audience and consequently turning the field of biology upsidedown. Contemporaries of Darwin hastened to throw their professional support behind oneside or the other of ensuring debate about the theory, with some seeking to provide their ownsupplemental theories and others attempting to prove the original wrong. 29 Althoughhis was not the first recapitulation, Haeckel captured the imagination of his fellow scientistswith the new famous phrase “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny.” Put into plain language, thissimply means that individual embryos of a species go through a series of stages mirroringthose that have occurred across the evolutionary development of the species as a whole.Darwin believed that something a bit similar, explaining the embryos of a species that evolvedfrom a common ancestor would closely resemble one another at certain stages. 30 Unlike Darwin, he believed that evolution was a clear progression from lower forms of life tohigher ones, with each new species on earth a step more advanced than the ones that hadpreceded it. 31 This concept generated a sensational buzz in the scientific community,as it hinted at the promise of ready access to a blueprint of the entire evolutionary history. Tosupport his theory, Haeckel, who also happened a skilled artist, made a series of woodcutscomparing the embryos of various species side by side. 32 These people were stilltrying to come to terms with the revolutionary ideas put forth by the theory of revolution, asthe resemblance between the embryos was uncanny.
