四、閱讀測驗
第一篇:
Children in Taiwan face many difficulties in their life – the pressure at school to do well on tests andexams, long hours of studying in “cram schools,” and little free time for fun. Now they are having yet anothernew and more serious problem: obesity.
According to recent studies and news reports, childhood obesity has become a major issue in Taiwan asmore and more school kids are overweight. Take 9th graders for example. About 34% teenagers in this agegroup are over the maximum of their ideal weight. Parents, teachers and government officials are all veryconcerned about this growing problem. If kids fail to maintain a proper weight in a younger stage, they couldsuffer from many serious health problems later in life.
Judging from this, the government has started promoting a program to inspire elementary and middleschool students to exercise more and to eat less unhealthy food. One of the important parts of this program isthe “6-5-20” concept. This series of numbers is used to remind students to exercise during the breaks amongtheir six daily classes for five minutes at a time and to chew their food twenty times before swallowing it.Another policy of this program is that snacks and drinks with 250 or more calories are banned from schools, while only healthy foods can be sold to students, such as 100% pure fruit juice, sushi, low-fat milk, andlow-calorie bread.
The program is being called a success by many parents and educators. Quite a few middle school studentshave already lost weight in only three months. This is good news for the rest of Taiwanese people, includingcollege students, office workers and the elder population, since it could mean that similar programs might workas well in different target groups across the country.
