中程理論是由社會學家R. Merton所提出，係指與某一特定經驗現象較為貼近的理論，抽象程度不必太高，也較容易加以驗證，能夠適用來解釋特定的社會現象，例如家庭與婚姻、社會化與角色…等等，中程理論是相對於涵蓋範圍較廣的理論而言，稱作「鉅型理論」（grand theory），涵蓋範圍較廣的理論通常抽象層次較高、並且為有系統的概念體系，處理的問題包羅萬象，遠超過個別的主題而自成一個自足的論於。
