(I)   Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the most influentialand beloved women in American history, once said that she had one regret: she wished she had beenprettier.  Who hasn’t felt the sameway?  We are all too aware of ourphysical imperfections.  To overcomethem, we tend to spend a lot of money on cosmetics, diet products, the latest fashions, and plastic surgery.  Why do we care somuch about how we look?  Because itmatters.  Because even when we learn tovalue people mostly for being wise, kind, and funny, we are still moved bybeauty.

No matter how much wepretend to be immune, beauty exertsits power over us.  Our sensitivity tophysical beauty is not a thing we can control at will.  One experiment showed that even babies preferto look at attractive faces just as adults do.  Beautiful children are more likely to befavored by their parents and teachers. Later when they grow up, they are more likely to get good jobs andpromotions.  It is also easier forattractive people to get help from strangers when in need.

These days, more andmore people rely on advanced technology to enhance their beauty.  Wrinkles can be stretched away with a facelift.  Still, it is possible to go toofar.  Some people have poison injected intotheir faces to get rid of wrinkles even though this means that their facialmuscles will be paralyzed.  Despite thefact that there are still many important things in life besides beauty, if youaim to be wise, kind, and funny, it doesn’t mean that you can’t also try yourbest to look beautiful.  There is noreason to feel guilty about being moved by beauty’s power.
