Christopher Latham Sholes invented the typewriter and the QWERTY keyboard in the 1870s. Whydidn’t he put the letters from A to Z? It’s because he wanted people to type slowly! It sounds really strangeto us today. However, people used typewriters a long time ago. The typewriter had bars with letters onthem. The bars went from A to Z, so people could type fast. When people typed too fast, the bars often gotstuck. To fix the problem, Sholes mixed up the letters. It became more difficult for people to remember theorder. Although most people don’t use typewriters today, they still use QWERTY keyboards.
