根據1982年〈國際海洋法公約〉中針對海峽之於國際航行的界定，麻六甲與新加坡海峽『沿岸國之主權與主權權利』（the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the Littoral States），從而確認麻六甲與新加坡海峽之航海安全、環境保護和海上保安的主要責任屬於沿岸各國。
