“Hey, Martin, I am really excited about going to the rodeo this Saturday night,” said Sandy.   “Since you have never been to the rodeo before, you are in for a real treat,” answered Martin.   “Yes, I am really looking forward to it,” replied Sandy. “Tell me more about it. I don’t know anything about the rodeo.” “Well, Sandy, the rodeo started back in the Old West. Cowboys would get together and test their skills in different events at the local rodeo. Each town had a rodeo and the cowboys would earn prize money, or maybe a new horse, by winning an event. Events include catching cows with ropes, riding broncos, riding bulls and other events. And all events are done on horseback, except for the bronco and the bull riding. But the best part, I think, is the clowns. Wild horse or bull riding is a test to see how long a cowboy can ride the animal. Once the animal throws him, and they will, because they are trained to do so, there is the danger of the animal jumping in the air and kickin out with his back legs, and when that happens, the cowboy might be seriously hurt. So the clowns come out and tease the animal; this way, the cowboy can run to safety.”   “Wow,” said Sandy. “ The clowns have a dangerous job.”   “Yes, they do,” said Martin. “But it is an important job. Safety for the cowboy is important.”   “Sounds like it will be a real treat. I can’t wait for Saturday to get there!” said Sandy.
