(a)In early June of 2017, vets at Australia Zoo found a baby in each of the two koalas, Empress and Nicole. Two motherkoalas at the zoo are taking care of their own babies by themselves. The mother koalas feed the milk to their babies duringthe first early months. The mother koalas hold their pouches to stop the baby from falling out. The baby koalas stay in theirmothers’ pouches because they have not yet grown large enough to go outside the pouches. The baby koalas will stretchtheir heads out of the pouches and begin trying to eat small leaves when they are six to seven months old. After the seven-month-old baby left the pouches, it holds its mother’s back. It begins learning to climb and to look for its own food. Whenthe baby is one year old, it can eat and drink by itself. The koalas spend lots of time sleeping. The zookeeper will tell thevisitors to keep their voices down when they are watching them or walking by the koala house.
