It is a natural thing in most cultures for people to be referred to by one or more nicknames. People usually get a nickname from their parents, siblings, relatives, classmates, coworkers, or friends. While it is possible to get a nickname in many ways, at some time in our lives most of us have probably been referred to by a “cute” form of our given name.
Infants and young kids in English-speaking countries commonly get cute nicknames by adding “y” or “ie” to the first part of a multi-syllable name. Therefore a boy named Benjamin would probably be called Benny, and a girl called Jennifer would be referred to as Jenny. Joseph, Donald, Catherine, and Christina would be called Joey, Donnie, Cathy, and Christie respectively.
However, when people grow older, they usually opt for a more mature-sounding form of their name. A person named Robert at birth would likely go through his childhood being called Robby, but in adulthood, his friends and colleagues would probably call him “Robert,” “Rob,” or even “Bob.” This is not always the case, though, as the example of world-famous movie star Johnny Depp illustrates.

What is this passage about?  這段話是關於什麼的?(D) Common ways of getting a nickname.
