Already in strong boots, dark green pants, and bright yellow shirts, each man jumps into his Kevlar jumpsuit as fast as he can. “First load to the plane!” a voice shouts over the speaker. All evening they’ve mostly been hanging around the operations desk at their base at Fort Wainwright, laughing and teasing each other, anxiously and excitedly waiting for their turn to jump out of a plane to fight a wilderness forest fire.
    Now they have exactly two minutes to suit up and be on the plane. It’s a much-practiced routine: Their hands fly quickly around their bodies, strapping on kneepads and shin guards, zipping into jumpsuits, and buckling into heavy nylon harnesses(輓具). The jumpsuits are prepacked with equipment—a cargo pocket(外袋) on one pant leg is stuffed with a solar panel and raincoat. The pocket on the other leg holds energy bars and a 150-foot rope. An oversize butt pouch contains a tent and a stuff sack for the parachute.
    Other smokejumpers help the men put on their main parachutes and safety chutes. Then each man grabs his jump helmet and his personal equipment bag, which holds a liter of water, leather gloves, hard hat, flares for lighting backfires, knife, compass, radio, and special aluminum sack(鋁袋) that serves as a fire shelter in case they get caught in the fire.
