科索緒爾符號學的特點是 單一符號(sign)分成意符(Signifier)和意指(Signified)兩部分。意符是符號的語音形象;意指是符號的意義概念部份。由兩部份組成的一個整體,稱為符號。意符和意指兩者之間的關系是武斷性(arbitrariness),沒有必然關連。例如英文中的 "tree" 的發聲及串字組合,因約定俗成的習慣被指涉為 "一種以木質枝桿為主體的葉本植物" 的概念。
