當我們在討論經濟系統以及原理有什麼差別時,常提出社會主義與資本主義作為比較.在資本主義經濟下,大多數的生意都是在處於私人擁有的,政府只能對公共的事業握有微小的掌控,然而這也衍生出了許多有關工作環境的安全,員工的薪水以及環境因素,而在現代資本主義下的國家中,政府規定所有的產業都是共有的,資本主義的經濟是很傳統的,並且造成了貧富之間的差異.社會主義則是為了消除這種差異,縱然社會主義嘗試著,仍然無法成功地達到這項目標.在社會主義的經濟體制下,資源以及財富的分配則是由政府決定,而這是個困難的嘗試,
